Artist Research : Stephen Gill

Stephen Gill is a British experimental photographer and artist.

Born in 1971, Gill grew up in Bristol where his father, a keen photographer himself, taught him how to develop and print photographs in their home dark room.

Gill gained an array of experience in the photography field; he worked for a local photography company whilst at school before going on to enroll in photography foundation course at the Filton college in bristol.

It was when Gill lived in Hackney, London, that he produced a series of images called Hackney Flowers.

In this series of photographs, Gill gathered flowers, leaves, berries and seeds, and other objects from around Hackney, before pressing them and photographing them alongside his own photographs of the area. He then proceeded to bury the prints of some of this multi layer photographs, resulting in a true mixed media representation of the Hackney environment.

Something I particularly like about this series of photographs is how Gill has experimented with the sense of scale.
